When people age or go through weight fluctuation, they lose natural roundness and shape in specific body areas that were once voluminous. A terrific way to regain lost volume is through an advanced cosmetic technique known as fat grafting (a fat transfer). A fat transfer extracts fat from one place on the body, and injects it into another area that could benefit from additional volume. A fat transfer can be used on widespread areas such as the breasts or buttocks or on delicate and smaller features such as the laugh lines, lips, cheeks, or under the eyelid. Fat transfers are often chosen when a patient wants natural enhancement rather than using a device (such as an implant) or a filler. Raleigh, NC plastic surgeon Dr. Glenn Lyle is skilled in utilizing the most effective liposuction and grafting methods for performing fat transfers. This cosmetic enhancement at Lyle Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Center creates natural-looking, appealing outcomes.
Ideal Candidates
Individuals who wish to have additional smoothness and volume in specific places that appear flat may be appropriate candidates for a fat transfer. This specialized enhancement is even more advantageous because it is a natural approach to create results by incorporating the patient's own fat. By doing this, there is less risk or worry for rejection. Both women and men considering this treatment at Lyle Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Center must be at a healthy weight and have targeted areas of fat to remove for the transfer. Furthermore, you must be a nonsmoker, as fat grafting uses only viable tissue for the most effective outcome.
Surgical Technique
When undergoing a fat transfer, you will be placed under the appropriate form of anesthesia. The exact sedation method will be based upon how much fat is being taken out, including the location where it will be reinstated. Liposuction is completed via a special cannula to precisely remove and take the fat, where it will then be harvested and separated through a centrifuge (which prepares the highest-quality fat for syringes). After preparing the injection site, the extracted fat will be added to the area chosen for the transfer. The process of injecting is performed in layers until the desired outcome has been attained. For some areas, multiple injections will be necessary.
What to Expect
After the transfer process has been completed, you will begin a healing phase. Keep in mind there will be at least two sites on the body that need to be carefully treated: the area involving liposuction and the injection sites. The overall recovery may be longer if a larger place on the body was addressed. A good example: a fat transfer for lip augmentation will generally only warrant a 1 – 2-day recovery whereas a transfer to the breasts or buttocks can take many more days. The sites affected will appear swollen with some possible bruising, but visible results can be seen right off the bat. The area where liposuction was used will appear slimmer. Fat grafting yields beautiful and lasting results, but there will be some resorption back to the body. For some, another transfer may be necessary down the road. There is minimal scarring associated with this procedure.

About UsFat Transfer FAQs
How much does a fat transfer cost?
The cost of a fat transfer can vary depending on several factors. For larger transfers, such as to the buttocks or breasts, a greater amount of fat is required. This involves surgical liposuction, followed by a more extensive process to purify the fat before grafting it to the desired areas. Smaller fat transfers, like those to the face or hands, require less fat and are generally quicker procedures. During your consultation with Dr. Lyle, the volume needed to achieve your goals will be discussed, along with a detailed cost estimate and available payment options.
Where can I have fat transferred?
Fat can be transferred almost anywhere on your body or face that you want to add volume. A few of the most common areas are the butt (typically called the Brazilian butt lift), breasts, hands, and face. A fat transfer may be combined with breast reconstruction or augmentation with implants to correct irregularities. A fat transfer may also improve age-related volume loss in the face and hands, especially to add shape to your lips or in the hollow under your eyes. Tell Dr. Lyle in your consultation about where you want to add volume so He can develop your custom fat transfer treatment plan.
How long will the results of a fat transfer last?
When maintained with proper care, a fat transfer provides natural, long-lasting results. Dr. Lyle utilizes advanced techniques to minimize fat reabsorption during the grafting process. However, it is normal for a small portion of the transferred fat not to integrate fully into its new location. To account for this, Dr. Lyle typically transfers slightly more fat than necessary. If you wish to refine or enhance your results over time, a second fat transfer can be performed in the future.
Are there any alternative treatments to a fat transfer?
Depending on the area that needs fat, you may have an alternate option to a fat graft. In your buttocks and breasts, implants may be surgically placed instead of a fat transfer. In your hands and face, Lyle Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics Center offers many dermal fillers for long-lasting volume and rejuvenation. Dr. Lyle will discuss the various choices during your consultation so you can get results that meet your concerns and goals.
What if I don't have enough fat for a transfer?
During your initial consultation with Dr. Lyle, he will discuss how much fat is required to meet your goals. You may not have enough fat for the transfer, but this is typically only an issue if you want a large volume of fat transferred or you have a very low body fat percentage. Fat may be taken from multiple areas or combined with donor fat. Dr. Lyle will discuss all of your choices in this appointment.
