About Labiaplasty

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Glenn Lyle wants to help women feel more comfortable and attractive with vaginal rejuvenation surgery to improve the size and shape of the labia. The labia minora (the internal " lips" of the vaginal area) may be oversized or have loose skin created by genetics, pregnancy, childbirth, or a physical trauma. A labiaplasty is a surgery that reduces the size of the labia minora and/or majora for a more normal appearance. This could eliminate discomfort and irritation while boosting confidence and sexual pleasure. Schedule a consultation at Lyle Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Center in Raleigh, NC to learn more about the benefits of labiaplasty and find out if you are a candidate for the surgery.

Ideal Candidates

A labiaplasty at Lyle Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Center may be helpful for women who are worried about the appearance of their vaginal area, which may be stretched due to genetics, childbirth, or trauma. Abnormal vaginal lips may cause pain, discomfort, itching, or irritation during physical activities like exercise and sex. A labiaplasty may also help if you can't wear revealing outfits (including leggings, bathing suits, or yoga pants) due to the size of your vaginal lips. While cosmetic surgery on the labia should not affect your ability to get pregnant or have a natural childbirth, Dr. Lyle suggests that you consider waiting until you are done having children to avoid undoing your results although younger patients with these concerns often proceed despite their desire for future pregnancies.

Surgical Technique

Most procedures for the labia are performed in our on-site procedure room under local anesthesia so you can drive yourself to and from your appointment. If the procedure is more extensive, you may require general anesthesia at an accredited facility, which will mean you need a responsible friend to pick you up after your surgery. Dr. Lyle will discuss these options and time estimates during your consultation so you can make any needed arrangements before your procedure. A labiaplasty is generally performed with a trimming technique to cut away loose tissue, and then the remaining skin is stitched back together. Another technique is the wedge procedure that cuts away a pie-shaped piece of tissue and extra folds from the clitoral hood before the tissue is sutured closed.

What to Expect

Usually patients require about a week to recover from swelling and discomfort before returning to work and normal activities. Dr. Lyle recommends you apply ice packs or cold compresses to the vaginal area as needed to decrease swelling. You cannot use tampons or engage in sexual activity for 4 – 6 weeks after your treatment. Patients typically have visible improvements in about six weeks with final results closer to six months after surgery. The results of labiaplasty usually last a long time, but natural aging, significant weight fluctuations, and childbirth may alter results.

Labiaplasty Frequently Asked Questions

Recovery, Intimacy & Lifestyle

Q: When can I resume sexual activity after labiaplasty?

A: Most patients are advised to wait about 6 weeks before having sex. This allows the tissue to fully heal and reduces the risk of discomfort or infection. Dr. Lyle will guide you based on your recovery timeline.

Q: Will labiaplasty affect sensitivity or sexual pleasure?

A: Labiaplasty focuses on the labia minora, not the clitoris or deeper structures. Most women do not experience a loss of sensitivity—and many feel more confident, which can improve intimacy. Even clitoral hood reduction is done to avoid the important nerve endings that supply the clitorus.

Q: Can I wear tight underwear or leggings after labiaplasty?

A: Not right away. It’s best to wear loose, breathable clothing during the first few weeks. Once swelling is gone, you can return to your usual wardrobe without issues.

Q: When can I go back to the gym after labiaplasty?

A: Light walking is encouraged, but avoid strenuous workouts, cycling, or running for about 4–6 weeks. Dr. Lyle will let you know when it’s safe to increase your activity.

Q: How painful is recovery from labiaplasty?

A: Discomfort is usually mild to moderate and lasts a few days. Most patients describe the pain as sore or tender rather than sharp. Prescription or over-the-counter pain relief is often enough.

Emotional & Personal Concerns

Q: Is it normal to feel emotional after labiaplasty?

A: Yes. It's common to feel sensitive during recovery, both physically and emotionally. Many patients feel relief and confidence afterward, but it’s okay to have mixed feelings in the early healing stage.

Q: What should I do if I feel embarrassed about asking for a labiaplasty?

A: You’re not alone—many women feel hesitant at first. Dr. Lyle provides respectful, private consultations in Raleigh -always accompanied by his all female staff-where you can ask anything in a safe, judgment-free setting.

Q: Will anyone be able to tell I had labiaplasty?

A: Not unless you choose to share. Scars are typically hidden in natural folds of the tissue and fade over time. Most partners and even doctors won’t notice a difference unless told.

Practical FAQs & Aftercare

Q: Can I use tampons after labiaplasty?

A: Avoid tampons for at least 4 weeks. Once the incisions have fully healed and you’ve had clearance from Dr. Lyle, you can return to using them as normal.

Q: Will I be able to ride a bike or horseback again?

A: Yes, but wait until healing is complete—usually 6 weeks or more. These activities put direct pressure on the area, so patience is key to comfort and safety.

Q: Can labiaplasty help with discomfort during exercise or intimacy?

A: Yes. Many patients choose labiaplasty to relieve irritation from tight clothing, workouts, or intimacy. Reducing excess labial tissue often improves comfort and confidence.

Q: Is it okay to shower after labiaplasty?

A: Yes, but avoid direct water pressure on the surgical area. Dr. Lyle recommends gentle hygiene routines and will provide full post-op care instructions.

Uncommon but Helpful FAQs

Q: Does labiaplasty affect childbirth or future pregnancies?

A: Labiaplasty does not interfere with fertility or pregnancy. However, future childbirth—especially vaginal delivery—may alter the results. Timing your surgery based on family planning is something to discuss with Dr. Lyle.

Q: Is labiaplasty ever covered by insurance?

A: It’s usually considered cosmetic and not covered. If you experience chronic irritation or functional issues, a gynecologist who does them may be able to help. Dr. Lyle does not accept or participate with insurance.

Q: Can I have labiaplasty if I’m postmenopausal?

A: Yes. Good candidates are based on anatomy and overall health, not age. Many postmenopausal women in Raleigh choose labiaplasty for both functional and aesthetic reasons. Estrogen creams may help with post operative healing.
