Labiaplasty has become a more popular procedure in the last 10 years. It typically involves removal of excess labia minora or "inner lips" Women are concerned about the protrusion beyond the labia majora and the visibility in tight yoga pants and bathing suits. It also can be unsightly and may interfere with sexual confidence. It is often uncomfortable during intercourse. There are basically 2 types of labiaplasties. The trim or edge technique involves removal of excess labia skin starting just below the clitoral hood and extends down towards the lower portion of the introitus. This technique results in a suture line which is along the entire edge. It is best for patients with elongation of the entire rim of the labia and patients that do not like excessive pigmentation that can be found. The wedge technique involves removal of a V-shaped portion of the excessive labia typically in the superior aspect where hypertrophy is more noticeable. In patients with hypertrophy primarily in this area-it is an ideal procedure in improving the appearance without having to make an incision along the entire length. Typically, the wounds heal rapidly in about 2 weeks. Many of Dr. Lyle's patients opt to have Vitalia-a radiofrequency energy device which helps internal vaginal rejuvenation- increasing lubrication, sensitivity and even urinary incontinence as well as additional tightening of external labia.
