Breast reduction can be beneficial to improve a woman's health when the large size of the breast causes neck pain, back pain, shoulder pain as well as rashes under the breasts. Many women with macromastia or breast enlargement are overweight. Although weight loss is encouraged, it usually does not result in significant relief of the neck and back pain. Generally patients suffer from breast drooping or ptosis and no amount of weight loss restores the nipple position to an appropriate level. A breast reduction also achieves a breast lift. This young 22-year-old woman suffered neck and back pain as well as significant rashes under the folds of her breasts. She was overweight and had made efforts to lose weight. It did not alleviate her neck and back pain nor her rashes. She underwent bilateral breast reduction by Dr. Lyle with removal of nearly 2 pounds per breast. Her recovery was uneventful and her smaller breast size alleviated neck pain and back pain and rashes. In addition, she was much more comfortable with exercise and also somewhat more self-conscious of the appearance of her abdomen with the smaller breasts. She went on to lose additional weight and is now more motivated to continue in her weight loss journey with more manageable breast size.
