Breast lift- also known as Mastopexy is a powerful cosmetic procedure that reshapes the breast and repositions the nipple to a higher position on the breast mound. The width of the breast is reduced resulting in a "perkier" breast. A small amount of reduction is usually done at the same time in women wishing to be smaller. A breast reduction involves more significant reduction of tissue, but there is no formal distinction between a small reduction and breast lift. Patients wishing to be larger with more volume in the upper pole will require an augmentation mastopexy with either a saline or a silicone gel implant. Many women wish to have more volume without having an implant. In this case, some fat grafting can be added. Plastic surgeons also have been incorporating a resorbable mesh which helps to support and shape the breast tissue while it is healing - allowing for better upper pole support. The incisional design of a breast lift is the same as a reduction. Either Vertical mastopexy (lollipop lift) or anchor pattern /inverted T scar techniques are most commonly utilized. Patients often ask if " the nipples are cut off." They are not. The surrounding top layer of the skin around this structure is surgically removed preserving the nipple areola complex. The entire breast mound is then repositioned. This 51-year-old woman wished to address her sagging breasts with a breast lift and small reduction. She was much happier with her new breast shape after mastopexy by Dr. Lyle.
