Breast Lift

This 40-year-old woman felt her breasts were too big and too droopy. She wore a 34 DD and wanted to maintain volume but go down in size slightly but have "perkier" breasts. She underwent a vertical breast lift which is also known as a short scar or "lollipop" lift". Approximately 150 grams (1/3 lb.) was removed per side. After surgery she maintained a D cup, but her breasts looked fuller and narrower. What is the difference between breast lift and breast reduction? A breast lift or mastopexy is very similar in design to a breast reduction but generally involves less tissue removal. Many times, only skin excess is removed but it can also involve some breast tissue as well. Both involve improvement in shape, elevation in nipple position and reduction in size - although the reduction involves a much greater degree of removal. The vertical lift or circumvertical technique is generally good for smaller breast reductions and mastopexies where there is not too much excess skin, and the nipple position has not fallen too far below the inframammary fold. Good shape can be obtained with less scar especially along the inframammary fold. In some cases, Dr. Lyle extends the incision laterally at the base of the breasts with a technique called an " L " scar which does leave a short inframammary fold incision laterally but does not extend towards the middle of the breast. This is helpful to avoid a visible scar when wearing a low-cut dress or bathing suit.
