Women who have decided to upon breast augmentation have many options to consider. Choice of incision location- inframammary fold vs axilla or peri areolar? Above or below the muscle? Saline versus Silicone gel? One of the most difficult decisions is what size breast implant as well as what profile to use. With round implants which are the most popular devices, all implant companies offer different profiles. A profile is based on the diameter of the implant and how much volume is in the implant. Examples of profiles are extra high profile, high profile, moderate plus profile and low profile. Placement of each of these devices can result in a slightly different shape to the breast. Some of the differences between these profiles are so subtle that it is impossible for the patient to make this selection. Use of breast sizers to try on in your bra prior to surgery is not very accurate as the implant is placed on top of the breast rather than under the breast as it is during surgery. 3D imaging-such as the Crisilix system that Dr. Lyle uses can be very helpful in deciding implant volume and profile. However, it is not a guarantee of result but does provide fairly realistic prediction of the appearance postoperatively. This 43-year-old woman had 3 children and lost breast volume and wished to be a full C cup. 3D imaging done preoperatively helped make a decision and she is very happy with her Allergan 345 cc SSF breast implants which achieved her goal.
