This 18-year-old woman desired breast augmentation. Because she was under 22 years old, saline augmentation was chosen. She had Mentor saline devices placed with 330 cc fill. She went from an A to a full C and was very happy with her new breast size. Can you get silicone gel breast implants when you are under 22? Yes, you can. They are considered off label by the FDA. Many procedures and products are done an in an off-label fashion such as administration of filler materials and neurotoxins ( Botox ®) It does not mean it is not legal and it does not mean it is not safe. It just means the FDA has not done studies on it. When the silicone gel breast implants became available again in November 2006 after a nearly 14-year moratorium, the patients in the study groups were restricted to patients 22 or older who received silicone breast implants under a company sponsored protocol. Because no patients under 22 were included in that study they did not deem the silicone implants indicated for those under 22. There is no evidence that patients between 18 and 22 have unfavorable outcomes with silicone implants. The implant companies will continue to warranty the implants even with patient's 18 and over. It is important to discuss the differences between these 2 types of implants. Benefits of saline? If the implant deflates you notice it immediately and the saline is absorbed harmlessly by the body. Silicone gel breast implant leakage is not always apparent.

With over 30 years of experience, he specializes in breast surgery and body contouring, to enhance patients' appearance after weight loss, pregnancy, and the effects of aging.

Dr. Lyle completed his medical degree at Wayne State University School of Medicine, followed by a general surgery residency at the University of Massachusetts and a plastic surgery residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch.

He is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a member of both the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and The Aesthetic Society (Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons society).
