This 55-year-old woman did not like her sagging breasts and wished to have modest improvement with a cup size change from a B cup to a C cup. She had some asymmetry of her breasts as well as breast ptosis. She underwent bilateral submuscular placement of Allergan smooth walled silicone gel breast implants, SSM- 255 cc along with mastopexy -also known as breast lift. She was very happy with the outcome. Her scars were treated initially with paper tapes followed up with silicone tape. Unfortunately there is no way to avoid a scar due to the incisions necessary for mastopexy but with time and proper management they fade and become less noticeable. Silicone gel breast implants have been utilized for mastopexy for many years even when only saline implants could be utilized for pure breast augmentation- silicone gel breast implants were available under a study protocol . After 2006, silicone gel breast implants became widely available. The manufacturers have made improvements in their design with less chance of rupture over time. Recently, they have also improved the warranty to cover implant rupture as well as capsular contracture. Capsular contracture is a phenomenon where excess scarring around the capsule of the implant can lead to firmness, shape change and even pain. If this occurs after augmentation, surgical treatment is generally necessary. The warranty covers some of the cost of These procedures.
