Many women considering abdominoplasty have concerns about abdominal wall hernias that coexist with their dissatisfaction about their abdominal appearance. Previous scars and hernias can make abdominoplasty much more complicated. In many cases abdominoplasty performed at the time of hernia repair can be very effective procedure. This 57-year-old woman had previous emergency appendectomy during which the general surgeon had to make an incision through the midline above and below the umbilicus. Her wound never healed properly, and she developed an abdominal hernia. Her abdomen was quite unsightly, and she had a hernia and a depressed scar with a belly button floating within the scar. She consulted with Dr. Glenn Lyle at Lyle Plastic Surgery and Aesthetic Center. The patient underwent abdominoplasty with some liposuction and hernia repair. Because of some underlying health issues, he did this in a hospital setting but it was an outpatient surgery. During the surgery the scars were removed around the belly and the incision above the belly button was improved. The hernia repair was done without mesh as her diastases repair reinforced the hernia repair. Although she still has some scarring in the middle of the lower abdomen -it was much improved, and the patient is very happy with her appearance and now plans to wear a two-piece bathing suit when she goes to the beach- something she would never dare do in the past!
