Abdominoplasty removes excess skin and fatty tissue from the lower abdomen, improving contour and slimming the waist area. Many women who undergo this procedure have had several pregnancies and complain about the stretch marks present. Stretch marks also known as striae distensae or striae gravidarum if associated with pregnancy-are a consequence of the rapid stretching of the lower abdomen that occurs with pregnancy and also with weight gain. Many women also note development of stretch marks in teenage years with hormonal changes and rapid body changes. A significant amount of stretch marks, especially those in the lower abdomen, are removed during abdominoplasty. The ones in the upper abdomen are then essentially relocated in the lower abdomen and often can be hidden with bathing suits. Lateral stretch marks are diminished although are not entirely removed. This mother of 2, had a BMI of 34 and although still overweight , desired removal of stretch marks and improvement of her lower abdomen. She underwent abdominoplasty with liposuction of the abdomen and flanks. Significant contour improvement was achieved and reduction in a large percentage of her stretch marks was a result. Remaining stretch marks can be treated with a variety of modalities such as radiofrequency micro-needling and other types of lasers. Improvement can be expected although total elimination is rare. Topical skin care products are unlikely to have much effect on stretch marks.
