This 32-year-old mother of 3 children desired improvements in the loose skin and excess fat as well as stretch marks of her abdomen. She had a diastases rectus which is a very common condition after pregnancy where upon the overlying normally tough fascial covering of the rectus muscles stretches out and weakens causing a bulge in the abdomen. A diastases rectus repair is typically part of most abdominoplasty operations. It involves tightening the fascia by a technique called plication and does not generally involve any entry into the abdominal cavity unless a hernia is involved. This portion of the procedure generally contributes to most of the pain associated with an abdominoplasty. Dr. Lyle injects Exparel, a long-lasting local anesthetic which helps alleviate most of the pain. This patient was very happy with her outcome with a much flatter appearing abdomen and a scar that could be hidden under most bathing suits and shorts. Abdominoplasty generally removes all of the excess skin located below the umbilicus and tightens the abdominal wall with the repair of the diastases.
