What is the ideal body mass index for a mommy makeover? The answer really depends on your overall body habitus, health and surgical goals. Generally, most plastic surgeons recommend operating when you have maximized your abilities to achieve your target weight goal. Many physicians will not do surgery if your BMI is over 30. Although BMI is a very useful index to guide some medical decision making, it is not a hard and fast criteria. Some patients have tried all sorts of diets and even weight loss drugs and exercise programs and barely seem to budge their weight . More importantly things like breast size and abdominal pannus don' change much Mommy makeover can make dramatic changes in patients of all body types. Some plus size/ full figured women are not looking to be skinny. Post pregnancy condition also does not necessarily improve with weight loss alone. With this in mind, Dr. Lyle will perform bigger surgeries in women with body mass index up to 35. In some cases, it is done in a hospital setting and almost always as an outpatient. This 59-year-old woman had been very unhappy with her body shape after weight gain and childbearing. Despite efforts at weight loss, she was unhappy with her appearance. She underwent a breast reduction with abdominoplasty and liposuction. Because her BMI was about 34, this was done in a hospital but as an outpatient and she did very well. She achieved her goals of a smaller cup size with removal of the abdominal pannus.

Dr. Glenn Lyle is a board-certified plastic surgeon serving the Raleigh, NC community at Lyle Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Center since 2002. With over 30 years of experience, he specializes in breast surgery and body contouring, to enhance patients' appearance after weight loss, pregnancy, and the effects of aging.

Dr. Lyle completed his medical degree at Wayne State University School of Medicine, followed by a general surgery residency at the University of Massachusetts and a plastic surgery residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch.
