Before considering a major surgery like mommy makeover, patients should be aware of health conditions and habits that may impact the success or safety of the operation. Generally, cosmetic surgery is reserved for patients with no significant health problems or at least well-managed ones. Conditions such as diabetes and heart disease often preclude patients from undergoing surgery. . Other common conditions such as obesity and smoking can have an impact on the procedure. Generally, smoking cessation is mandatory before most elective cosmetic procedures. This 46-year-old woman, mother of 3 wished to have a mommy makeover and actually wanted to have a BBL as well. She had recently quit smoking. She was overweight so she had significant risk factors. Dr. Lyle recommended a 3 month waiting period after her smoking cessation before doing surgery. He also recommended weight loss although she was unable to lose much. She underwent a vertical mastopexy with some fat transfer to her breast and liposuction of the flanks and abdomen and abdominoplasty. She did very well however a somewhat more conservative procedure was recommended. Overly aggressive liposuction can cause compromise of the wound closure and lead to wound healing problems so adjustments to the technique is necessary. The patient is happy and now has lost a bit more weight and is a candidate for a BBL with some additional liposuction of the flanks and abdomen. She has stayed off of cigarettes!
