Liposuction is not ideal as a method to lose weight. It is designed to address areas of stubborn fat and improve shape in areas that are resistant to diet and exercise. To get optimal results, liposuction requires a lot of postoperative management including adequate compression garments, sometimes lymphatic massage and maintenance of weight after surgery. It is recommended that patients continue to attempt to lose weight and maintain an exercise program postoperatively. Dr. Lyle also recommends starting an exercise program even if patients are not doing this preoperatively. Because liposuction does not involve a lot of incisions ,resumption of physical activities can occur even at 2 weeks. This patient is a 38-year-old woman who wished to address stubborn areas of fat in her hips and thighs as well as back and abdomen. She also wanted more balance as she felt her upper body was much smaller than her lower body. She underwent bilateral breast augmentation with Sientra 385 cc submuscular silicone breast implants. She also had Vaser assisted liposuction of the abdomen hips and thighs and flanks. She had removal of 2800 cc of lipolysis. The Vaser device emulsified fat and provide some degree of skin retraction. The patient was very diligent with postoperative compression and in fact lost some additional weight after surgery-via good dietary habits and exercise program as she was motivated to maintain a good result.
