One of the challenges in liposuction is avoidance of loosening the skin after fat reduction. When patients lose weight, particularly older individuals, loose skin results. The same occurs with liposuction. Effective liposuction involves appropriate fat removal and resulting skin tightening. The Vaser device is somewhat more effective in achieving skin tightening but in many circumstances additional measures are necessary to further tighten the skin. The Renuvion device is a energy device which utilizes radiofrequency energy with temporary introduction of helium gas into the liposuctioned areas causing further contraction of collagen. Recently there have been warnings about potential risks of this procedure-Including burns, deformities and fibrosis.. Dr. Lyle has been using this device for several years and remains cautious in its use. This 52-year-old woman desired improvements in her back, flanks and arms primarily. Because of aging, liposuction alone would have led to further loosening. She underwent liposuction removing 2700 cc of lipolysate( 60-70% fat) with the Vaser device and Renuvion treatment to her back and arms and flanks. Results are only at 3 months; in general , more improvement is expected over a total of 6 months. In the right hands, Renuvion remains an effective modality In facilitating skin tightening but must be used with extreme caution to avoid complications.
