Brachioplasty or armlift is a procedure designed to address sagging skin and excess fat in the upper arms. Typically, the incision goes from the elbow to the armpit. On major weight loss patients with excess tissue in the axilla, it is sometimes extended into the chest. Patients with significant weight loss or who are genetically predisposed to large arms will often request brachioplasty or liposuction to improve this as they are very self-conscious and unable to wear short sleeve shirts. It is not uncommon for patients who have other significant body contouring desires like abdominoplasty and breast lifting to request brachioplasty to be done during the procedure and make this a priority. Brachioplasty is often combined with breast lifting or reduction as well as abdominoplasty. This 50-year-old woman has been overweight most of her life but has described herself as full figured and really had made no significant attempt to lose weight. She was very concerned about her arm appearance as well as her abdomen and she underwent plus size brachioplasty which included some liposuction to the arms as well as a full abdominoplasty with liposuction. Because her BMI was over 35, Dr. Lyle performed this at Rex Hospital but as an outpatient. Patients with higher BMIs have higher complication rates such as wound healing problems and higher risk of DVT so special precautions have to be made. The patient was quite pleased with the improvements that were achieved .
