Weight loss will often cause sagging tissues of the abdomen, arms legs, face and breasts. Although weight loss is beneficial, the aftereffects may require surgical treatment to improve them. This 77-year-old woman was tired of being overweight and later in life had decided to commit herself to weight loss through diet and exercise. She ended up losing well over 60 pounds but ultimately developed very loose tissue of her breasts which were flat and uneven. At age 77, it is not unexpected to have breast ptosis but in her case the weight loss accentuated it. She and her husband enjoyed the beach life for 6 months of the year having a beach home and often wearing bathing suits for much of the day. She decided to do something about her sagging uneven breasts. She wanted to look better in bathing suits and summer outfits. She was otherwise very healthy and felt to be a good candidate for mastopexy. Dr. Lyle performed a standard breast lift extending it further into the lateral bra roll where she had a lot of loose skin. She did not have breast implants- just her native tissue reshaped into a smaller perkier, fuller breast. She now enjoyed wearing more form fitting clothing and could wear two-piece suit while taking strolls on the beach. Many patients ask-am I too old to have cosmetic surgery? The answer really depends on your overall health and expectations. The decision should be made in consultation with the board-certified plastic surgeon with experience.
