What Is A Breast Augmentation?
Colloquially referred to as a “boob job,” breast augmentation, or augmentation mammaplasty, is a revolutionary surgical technique intended to improve the breasts’ size, shape, projection, and symmetry. This surgery helps to restore a youthful projection and create a balanced, feminine shape that enhances the natural breast-hip curve by enhancing contours and adding volume.
Various factors, including weight fluctuations, pregnancy, breastfeeding, genetics, aging, and gravity, can impact the appearance of the breasts over time. These alterations frequently result in asymmetry, a loss of volume, or a deflated appearance, which can impact a woman’s confidence and sense of femininity. An hourglass figure is mostly defined by the breasts, meaning these modifications may also have a big emotional or mental impact.
Breast augmentation surgery provides a solution, enabling women to regain their sense of body confidence and self-worth while achieving bigger, rounder, and more proportionate breasts. In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, the process helps balance the entire silhouette, improving one’s physical and mental health.

How to Prepare for Your Breast Augmentation Procedure
In preparation for your breast augmentation procedure, it’s important to follow Dr. Lyle’s pre-operative instructions carefully to ensure a smooth and successful experience. This may include completing any necessary medical evaluations, adjusting medications, and refraining from smoking, if applicable. Maintaining a balanced diet and stable weight will also help support a healthier recovery.
Before surgery, create a comfortable recovery space at home equipped with essentials such as loose clothing, supportive bras or compression garments, and any prescribed medications. You will require assistance with everyday tasks in the first several days following surgery, so make arrangements for a trusted family member or close friend to help you during this time.
How Is a Breast Augmentation Performed in Raleigh, NC?
When you arrive at Lyle Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics Center in Raleigh, NC, on the day of your breast augmentation, you’ll be welcomed by our warm and attentive team, who will ensure your comfort and ease as you prepare for surgery. You’ll then meet with Dr. Lyle, who will review the details of your personalized breast augmentation plan. Dr. Lyle will mark the specific areas on your breasts for incisions and adjustments to achieve your desired size and shape.
During this time, Dr. Lyle will explain every aspect of the procedure, including the type of anesthesia that will be administered, the incision technique he will use, the placement of the implants, and the type of sutures employed. He will also discuss the recovery process and anticipated discomfort and review all post-operative care instructions to ensure a smooth healing journey.
Once the surgical area is prepped, a board-certified anesthesiologist will administer your general anesthesia, ensuring you are completely comfortable and asleep during the procedure. Dr. Lyle will then perform the breast augmentation, which can typically take between 45 minutes to 1 hour.
After the surgery is completed, your incisions will be closed carefully, and you’ll be taken to a private recovery area, where our team will monitor your progress and provide care until you’re ready to return home.
The Different Types of Breast Implants in Raleigh, NC
As a breast and body specialist, Dr. Glenn Lyle has extensive expertise in performing breast augmentation using a variety of advanced techniques and implant options. At Lyle Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics Center in Raleigh, NC, patients can choose between silicone and saline implants, both offering distinct advantages.
Saline implants have the advantage of a customizable fit during surgery because they are filled after insertion. Additionally, saline implants pose no risks if ruptured, as the saline solution can be safely absorbed by the body. Silicone implants are the most commonly recommended devices due to their natural feel and capacity to emulate the texture and look of natural breast tissue.
For those seeking a more natural approach to breast enhancement, Dr. Lyle also specializes in breast augmentation with fat grafting. This innovative technique uses fat harvested from areas like the abdomen, flanks, or thighs, which is purified and injected into the breasts. This method enhances volume without implants and provides a subtle, natural look and feel. This Technique rarely improves size more than one cup and usually is only ½ cup.
The Different Breast Implant Shapes and Sizes
Breast implants now come in various shapes and sizes, allowing for a highly personalized augmentation experience. The two main shapes include round implants, which create enhanced cleavage and a fuller upper breast appearance. These implants have different profiles that offer varying projections which help to shape the breast according to your desire. Teardrop-shaped implants have fallen out of favor in most cases and are rarely recommended.
Implant sizes are measured in cubic centimeters (ccs) rather than cup sizes, offering precise customization to suit each patient’s goals and body proportions. Additionally, implant projection affects how far the breasts extend outward from the chest, refining the final result.
At Lyle Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics Center, Dr. Glenn Lyle will help you select the perfect combination of shape, size, and projection to achieve your desired aesthetic while maintaining a balanced, natural look.
The Different Breast Implant Placements
Another decision you will make with Dr. Lyle during your consultation is the best placement option for your desired results. There are two main placement options, each with unique benefits based on your individual circumstances and anatomy:
- Submuscular (Under the Muscle): In this placement, the implant is positioned beneath the pectoral muscle. This option provides a more natural appearance, especially for those with minimal natural breast tissue. It can also reduce the risk of visible rippling and capsular contracture while offering enhanced long-term support.
- Subglandular or SubFascial (Over the Muscle): With this approach, the implant is placed directly behind the breast tissue but above the chest muscle. This placement typically allows for a shorter recovery period and may be ideal for patients with sufficient natural tissue to provide coverage and a smooth contour.
The Different Breast Augmentation Incision Techniques
A widely asked question from potential recipients of a breast augmentation is, “How are the implants placed?” The answer lies in the different incision techniques, each tailored to suit individual needs and desired outcomes.
Inframammary Incision
Increase the size and contour of your breasts to accentuate your natural measurements and provide a well-proportioned silhouette.
Periareolar Incision
During a periareolar technique, an incision is made along the edge of the areola, similar to the appearance of a crescent moon. This approach allows for discreet scarring that blends with the natural color transition of the skin. It provides direct access for implant placement but may not be ideal for those with smaller areolas or specific augmentation goals.
Transaxillary Incision
This incision is made within the natural folds of the underarm, leaving no scars on the breast itself. A less common choice, it’s typically used for certain implant types or patient preferences.

What to Expect During a Breast Augmentation Recovery
After your surgery with Dr. Lyle, you may experience some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort around the chest. Pain is typically minimal and can be effectively managed with prescribed pain medication and wearing a supportive surgical bra or compression garment to aid in healing.
It’s normal to feel tightness or pressure in the chest as your body adjusts to the implants, but these sensations usually subside within a few days. Patients are encouraged to avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and upper body movements for the first 1 to 2 weeks. However, light walking is recommended to promote circulation and support the recovery process.
Following Dr. Lyle’s detailed post-operative instructions is crucial during the healing period. These may include guidelines on wound care, activity restrictions, and follow-up appointments to monitor your progress. Temporary side effects, such as swelling and slight sensitivity around the incision sites, are common but should improve as your body continues to heal. Our team is always available to answer questions or address concerns throughout your recovery.

Breast Augmentation FAQs With Dr. glenn Lyle
How do you choose the best profile, style, and implant size for me?
Your surgeon chooses an implant. It is highly individualized. Careful measurements and 3D imaging help arrive at size and profile choices.
What type of breast implant looks and feels the most natural?
All manufacturers offer a variety of implant choices. No one device works for everyone. Selection must be individualized.
What is the benefit of using the Keller Funnel in the breast augmentation procedure?
Funnels reduce the insertion trauma and protect the implant front, the skin, and breast tissue, which may harbor minute amounts of bacteria – even with strict sterilization methods.
When do I need an internal bra or GalaFLEX for Breast augmentation?
The use of mesh support is becoming more popular and is usually indicated with sagging tissue – especially with weight loss patients or in augmentation mastopexy or revisions for implant malposition.
Usually, for weight loss patients or those with loose tissues.
Is breast augmentation performed under general anesthesia?
Either General or IV sedation is preferred.
Do I need to wear a bra after breast augmentation?
Yes. We will provide you with a post-op garment.
Can I still get mammograms after breast implants are placed?
Of course! The mammography will use special views called Eklund views to image the Breast tissue properly.
Will sutures need to be removed after breast augmentation?
No . Dissolvable internal sutures are used.
Will I need my breast implants replaced in the future?
More than likely. Implants are not considered lifetime devices, but they are made much better these days and are expected to last longer.
How do I make sure that I get the size that I want?
A combination of 3D imaging and sizing and reviewing pictures before surgery help arrive at the ideal size.
Will I have cleavage? Can my breast be placed higher on my chest?
Cleavage can be created depending on anatomy, size of the implants, and technique. Higher profile devices may allow the breast appearance to look higher.
Do you use the "no touch technique"?
What are the benefits of the “no-touch” technique? Yes. The advantage of minimizing touching the implant is that although the surgical site is meticulously prepped with skin-safe antiseptic, our skin still harbors minuscule amounts of bacteria that can come in contact with the implant. While this rarely causes infection, it can lead to capsular contracture or, in rare instances, infection.
How do I know if I will need to combine a breast lift with implants?
Dr Lyle will help with this decision, but generally, if the nipple is at or below the fold or the breast tissue is very saggy, a lift is recommended.
Does someone have to stay with me after surgery?
Yes. We recommend an adult stay with you for the first 12 hours post-op.
What is recovery like? When can I start exercising or return to work?
Generally, recovery is 5-7 days before returning to sedentary work and driving. Light exercise, like walking, can occur in a week, but vigorous exercise should last 4-6 weeks.
Will I have drains after breast augmentation?
No . In some cases, such as implant removal with capsulectomy, drains may be used but rarely for primary augmentation.
Will my nipple lose sensation?
Rarely. Up to 15% of patients experience numbness, which is usually temporary.
Will there be a scar after breast augmentation?
Yes. All incisions result in scars. But usually, they are fine lines and hidden.
