What Is a Breast Lift?
A breast lift (mastopexy) is a transformative and healing procedure designed to tighten, lift, and restore the appearance of youthful breasts. This surgery is ideal for individuals who are struggling with loose, asymmetrical, or sagging breasts. It’s essential for candidates to have realistic expectations, a positive outlook, and a commitment to maintaining a healthy lifestyle post-surgery to maximize and maintain their results. How Is a Raleigh Breast Lift Performed?
As a breast and body specialist, Dr. Lyle uses advanced techniques during breast lift procedures to minimize scarring and recovery time, ensuring patient comfort and achieving outstanding results. His precision and meticulous attention to detail make his procedures smooth and successful.
At our modern, state-of-the-art surgical center, a breast lift is typically performed under general anesthesia and usually takes about two to three hours, depending on the complexity of the procedure.
Different Mastopexy Techniques
Periareolar
also called Donut mastopexy, this technique is generally for more minor lifts. The incision only goes around the areola ( pigmented area around the nipple) and doesn’t shape the breast very well.
Vertical or Lollipop or Circumvertical
popular with smaller elevations, also called short scar- this technique doesn’t involve an incision ( or maybe a minor one) in the inframammary fold.
Anchor pattern or Inverted T
Commonly used with very loose-skinned patients with very droopy breasts with a lot of excess skin. Also, the same pattern is used for most breast reductions.
During the surgery, Dr. Lyle strategically places incisions. The incisions commonly go around the areola and may extend downward or along the breast crease to achieve optimal lift and contour. He then carefully reshapes and elevates the breast tissue, removing excess skin to create a firmer, more youthful appearance. Dr. Lyle also will frequently recommend a supportive mesh that acts as an “internal bra” to hold the newly molded breast tissue in position as it heals. This allows for a longer-lasting result Throughout the process, Dr. Lyle prioritizes discreet incision placement to ensure scarring is as minimal and well-hidden as possible.
How to Prepare for Your Breast Lift Procedure
In preparation for your breast lift procedure, it’s important to follow all of Dr. Lyle’s pre-operative instructions. These may include medical evaluations and testing, adjustments to medications, and quitting smoking, if applicable. Maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise will help ensure you’re in optimal health for surgery and recovery.
Preparing your home for post-operative care is also an essential part of your preparation. This may include setting up a comfortable recovery area with all your necessary items, like loose, comfortable clothing, prescription medications, plenty of liquids and healthy meals, entertainment for the first few days of rest, and supportive bras or garments. Make sure you have a reliable support system in place, as having someone to assist you during the initial days of recovery can make a big difference.
What to Expect During a Breast Lift Recovery
Recovery with attentive care can be smooth, comfortable, and entirely manageable with proper preparation. After your surgery with Dr. Lyle, you may experience some swelling, bruising, and tenderness around the chest area. Discomfort is to be expected post-surgery and can be effectively managed with prescribed pain medication and supportive post-surgical bras, which aid your healing process and keep you comfortable.
It’s normal to feel some tightness or sensitivity in the breasts, but these symptoms typically improve within three to seven days. You’ll be advised to avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and movements that strain the chest area for the first one to two weeks. Exercise should be limited to light walking to help encourage circulation and support recovery.
Following Dr. Lyle’s post-operative care instructions is essential during your recovery. Our team will provide you with follow-up care, and we are always available by phone to address any questions or concerns you may have. Temporary side effects, such as mild swelling and numbness around the incision sites, are expected and will gradually subside as your body heals.

Breast Lift FAQs With Dr. Glenn Lyle
Can my breasts sag after a breast lift?
Yes, recurrent sagging can occur, and often, the nipple does not fall, just the lower portion of the breast tissue. This is why, in many cases, we recommend an absorbable mesh to hold the tissue in place while it heals.
How should I sleep after a breast lift?
We recommend sitting with your back slightly elevated and avoiding sleeping on your side. For some people, this is uncomfortable, and we recommend nesting up with pillows.
How long does it take for breast lift incisions to heal?
The healing process takes about 6 weeks, although the healing strength is usually good enough to increase your movements in 2 to 3 weeks without worrying about wound separation. We cover suture lines with paper tape and silicone tape for a long time, which helps the healing process.
Can I combine a breast lift and breast augmentation or breast reduction?
Breast augmentation can be added to a mastopexy and frequently is added. Breast reduction does provide a breast lift; it just removes more tissue than a typical breast.
