How Can I Check My Own Breast Implants? - Implant Self Examination

Hello, I’m Dr. Glenn Lyle , a board-certified plastic surgeon in Raleigh, NC. If you’ve had breast augmentation , regular breast implant checks are essential to ensure your implants are in good condition and your overall health is maintained. Many patients ask me, “How can I check my breast implants?” This guide will walk you through a simple yet effective self-assessment process while explaining when professional evaluation is necessary.

Why Checking Your Breast Implants Matters

Breast implants, while durable, are not lifetime devices. Over time, changes may occur due to natural aging, lifestyle factors, or implant-related complications. These changes can sometimes be subtle, making regular self-examinations crucial. Performing routine checks allows you to detect any abnormalities or discomfort early, which is key to preventing potential complications and ensuring your implants continue to enhance your confidence and well-being.

Potential Risks of Ignoring Implant Checks

Neglecting to check your implants regularly can lead to undetected complications, which may worsen over time. Some of the most common risks include:

·  Capsular contracture: This occurs when the scar tissue around the implant tightens, leading to discomfort, pain, and a noticeable change in breast shape. The condition can develop gradually and may eventually require surgical correction.

·  Implant rupture: While modern implants are designed to be highly durable, they are not indestructible. A rupture in saline implants results in noticeable deflation, while a silicone implant rupture may go unnoticed without imaging tests. Ignoring signs of rupture can lead to further complications if not addressed.

·  Infections or inflammation: Though rare, infections can develop around the implant, causing redness, swelling, and tenderness. Any persistent discomfort should be evaluated promptly by a plastic surgeon.

·  Asymmetry and changes in appearance: Over time, implants may shift due to weight fluctuations, aging, or trauma. Regular checks help you identify changes in symmetry and shape before they become more pronounced.

How to Perform a Breast Implant Check at Home

A self-examination is a simple but effective way to ensure your breast implants remain in good condition. This process should be performed in a comfortable, well-lit setting at least once a month.

Stand in Front of a Mirror

·  Begin by standing upright in front of a mirror with your arms relaxed at your sides. Observe both breasts, paying close attention to any noticeable changes in size, shape, or symmetry. Any sudden differences between the two breasts may indicate a problem.

·  Next, raise your arms above your head and check for any visible abnormalities such as dimpling, bulging, or irregular skin texture. If you notice any rippling, indentations, or redness, take note and consult a plastic surgeon.

· Finally, bend forward slightly to see if the implants move naturally and maintain symmetry. If one appears significantly different from the other, it could be a sign of capsular contracture or shifting.

Feel for Unusual Changes

·  Use the pads of your fingers to gently press around each breast in circular motions. Start at the outer edges and gradually move toward the nipple, feeling for any lumps, hard spots, or irregular textures.

·  If one implant feels significantly firmer than the other, this could be a sign of capsular contracture or internal scarring. If you detect any persistent discomfort or pain while applying gentle pressure, seek medical evaluation.

·  Check beneath the breasts and along the implant edges for any unusual sensations or hardening, which may indicate implant displacement or other complications.

Pay Attention to Sensations

·  Any sudden pain, numbness, or tingling should not be ignored. While occasional sensitivity changes are common, persistent or severe pain should be evaluated by a specialist.

·  Increased tightness or discomfort that worsens over time could indicate capsular contracture or internal complications. If you experience difficulty moving your arms or feel restricted by tightness, consider scheduling an appointment with a plastic surgeon.

Watch for Signs of Rupture or Deflation

·  Saline Implants: A rupture in a saline implant usually results in noticeable deflation within a few hours or days. If you observe a significant decrease in breast size, it’s essential to seek immediate medical attention for implant replacement.

·  Silicone Implants: A rupture in a silicone implant, often called a “silent rupture,” may not present obvious symptoms. MRI or ultrasound imaging is recommended  at 5-6 years and then every few years to detect leaks.

When to See a Plastic Surgeon

If you experience any of the following, schedule a consultation with me at my Raleigh, NC practice:

·  A sudden or gradual change in breast size or shape.

·  Persistent pain, tightness, or discomfort in one or both breasts.

·  Noticeable rippling, dimpling, or unusual texture in the breast skin.

·  Any concern about a possible rupture or implant leakage.

How Often Should You Get a Professional Implant Check?

While personal checks are important, professional assessments should also be part of your implant care routine. Most plastic surgeons recommend:

·  Annually: A routine exam with your surgeon to ensure implant integrity and overall breast health.

·  Every 5-10 years: MRI or ultrasound imaging for silicone implants to detect silent ruptures.

·  Immediately: If you notice any changes in breast appearance, texture, or sensation.

Advanced Medical Evaluations

To accurately diagnose implant-related concerns, additional imaging tests may be required:

·  MRI Scan: Recommended for detecting silent ruptures in silicone implants. Although the best diagnostic test, they are more expensive and difficult to schedule.

·  Ultrasound: A less invasive imaging method used to assess implant structure.

·  Mammograms: Should be performed at imaging centers experienced in evaluating breast implants. They are not the best test to detect a rupture.

Maintaining Breast Implant Health

·  Schedule Regular Appointments: Regular professional evaluations help catch issues before they escalate.

·  Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: Avoid excessive weight fluctuations, which can impact implant positioning.

·  Stay Educated: Keep up with FDA guidelines regarding implant safety and recommended imaging timelines.

·  Wear Supportive Bras: A properly fitted bra can help maintain breast shape and prevent implant shifting.
