Many patients with weight loss will note excess skin of the abdomen and thighs. The combination of abdominoplasty and thigh lift can be performed however, the recovery will likely be somewhat longer than when each procedure is performed alone. Vertical thigh lift involves removal of medial thigh tissue from the knee to the groin. Unfortunately there will be a long scar which cannot be entirely hidden. Thigh lift in patients with large bulky thighs are more difficult than patients with loose sagging skin as the tension upon the closure is greater and scar quality suffers. Liposuction can be added to debulk the thigh however there are limitations. This patient had lost 40 pounds and desired improvements in her abdomen and thigh. She underwent abdominoplasty with vertical thigh lift and liposuction. Her recovery took approximately 3 weeks before she was able to get back to fully normal activities except working out. Vertical thigh lift can be associated with complications such as wound dehiscence, lymphoceles-which are pockets of lymphatic fluid collection present in the suture line that may require aspiration. Compression garments are necessary for at least 6 weeks to reduce swelling in the legs. Many patients with this condition also have coexisting varicose veins and it is recommended that they get treated before undergoing thigh lifting.
