A very small incision is made in the skin and a cannula will be placed in the incision. The cannula is a special tool that helps loosen the fat as it is being vacuumed out. Once the fatty deposits have been eliminated, Dr. Lyle will close the incision. Depending on the number of areas being treated, your surgery could last 1–3 hours. This special probe uses ultrasonic energy to gently shatter the fat and free it from its surrounding fibrous network, and he then uses power-assisted liposuction (PAL) to remove the fat. Vaser helps to emulsify the fat and often allows for more definition and some degree of skin shrinkage. It is also ideal for targeting tough areas like the flanks and male breast.

The fat that is extracted can be used to enhance areas of the buttock, hips, and breast through a process known as fat transfer or fat grafting. The best-known procedure is often called a Brazilian Butt Lift, where fat is injected into buttock tissues to enlarge and reshape it. Fat extracted has to be sterilely collected, processed, and treated to make it suitable for grafting. It is also suctioned at lower pressure to reduce damage to the fat cells.

Another technology called Renuvion or J Plasma is frequently used, which helps shrink the skin a bit to “tighten” liposuctioned areas. The probe is placed in the same incision that the liposuction was performed through at the end of the fat extraction. Renuvion uses radiofrequency energy delivered through helium gas, which serves to rapidly heat up exposed collagen fibers and safely cool the overlying skin to prevent injury. The result is a shrinking of the stretched-out fibers to tighten them.
