Abnormally large breasts can cause social, functional, and physical concerns for women. In addition, uneven and very large breasts can create insecurity, self-confidence issues, and embarrassment, as well as aches and pains. Dr. Glenn Lyle is a board-certified plastic surgeon who continues to help countless women regain their confidence and feel more comfortable through surgical reduction of the breasts.
This aesthetic breast surgery at Lyle Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics Center reduces excess breast, fat, and skin to redefine and reshape the breasts to a more compatible size. Breast reduction in Raleigh also reshapes the size of the nipple/areola area and repositions them, so they are symmetric with the new breast size. In all cases, a breast lift is incorporated to produce a tighter and younger-looking appearance.

This surgery is helpful for women who experience emotional stress or find it difficult to lead an active life because of the weight of their breasts. Also, if you deal with ongoing skin problems as well as back or neck pain, this surgery can eliminate many of these annoyances. It is important patients are at or near their goal weight and generally are in good health. Dr. Lyle will take on patients with same underlying health issues—but the surgery may have to be performed at Rex Hospital as an outpatient.
Case Study
This is a 28-year-old woman who developed large breasts in her early teen years and has been self-conscious and suffered from neck and back pain for years. She wore a 36E cup. Breast reduction of 645 grams on the right and 810 grams on the left (left was larger) achieved major improvement. She has no back pain and now wears a small C and is very happy.
How Is Breast Reduction Performed?
Breast reduction surgery is an outpatient procedure in Raleigh performed with general anesthesia. The length of surgery is dependent upon several factors, including the complexity of the incision, the overall reduction technique, and, finally, how much reduction is required. The nipple and areola repositioning are also a factor. For some patients, liposuction is used for fat reduction in the axilla or bra roll area. During the private consultation, all of these factors are addressed with Dr. Lyle. Scarring is also discussed, as it is common for scar lines to be visible, although surgical skill and advanced methods have led to a noticeable reduction in the visibility of scars. Depending on the patient’s anatomy, the reduction will be done either with an anchor or a vertical incision. The breast tissue will then be removed, and the existing tissue and skin will be pulled tight and secured.
What to Expect During Breast Reduction Recovery
After surgery, you will be observed closely in our comfortable recovery area and then discharged home to heal. A small, tube-like draining device may be implanted near the surgical site to reduce drainage from swelling and bleeding. A medical sports bra will be worn for several days that will provide mild compression during the initial healing period. Within about a month, the breasts will settle and the post-op effects will diminish. Patients who want a more detailed understanding of healing stages, swelling, scar care, activity restrictions, and recovery milestones can read our Breast Reduction Recovery Timeline, Healing & Scars guide.
