Reverse Tummy Tuck- Effective for Upper Abdomen, Raleigh, NC
Condition
A reverse abdominoplasty is not nearly as common as a standard tummy tuck. It can be a very effective technique for upper abdominal skin excess. It is also more common in patients who have had prior abdominoplasty but have developed laxity in their upper abdomen. The incision typically falls in the crease under the breast but often has to go across the middle and may be visible even in bathing suits so it is not as favorable as the tummy tuck scar.
This 70-year-old woman had undergone prior abdominoplasty in the past, but with aging she developed laxity of her upper abdomen with a fairly flat lower abdomen. She was looking for improvements and was not concerned about the scar location as she can hide it with bathing suits that she wore.
Surgery
Dr. Lyle performed a reverse abdominoplasty which often is combined with some liposuction to help reduce fat deposits. The incision is carried out from underneath the breasts and almost always across the middle and the lower chest area. It often has to be extended laterally to address loose skin of the flanks. Not nearly as much skin and fat is removed and this procedure and suturing to deep tissue is necessary to maintain the results. This surgery frequently will have less recovery and may not even need drain tubes but it still can result in significant discomfort while it is healing.
Result
The patient was very happy with her outcome and in fact went on a cruise and wore two-piece bathing suits- 3 months after surgery. She Much more confident in the appearance of her abdomen.
