One of the most bothersome concerns that men have as they age, is the appearance of their neck. Men generally are not as concerned about upper facial aging, but the neck is a dead giveaway of aging. Because standard facelifts which include neck lifts, involve incisions in front of the ear and behind, men are less willing to have noticeable scars, especially when they wear their hair short and cannot hide them.
This 74-year-old gentleman wished to have improvement in his loose skin of the neck. He has no interest in a facelift. Noninvasive measures would unlikely make much difference. Dr. Lyle discussed a direct neck lift which involves removing the skin of the mid portion of the neck directly. Although this does result in a scar, it usually heals pretty well and since in men this skin is hair-bearing, can be hidden while it heals with some beard growth.
Surgery
This patient underwent a direct neck lift under local anesthesia only. The procedure took about an hour and involves removal of excess skin and fat and realignment of underlying muscle. Recovery is usually about a week of limited activity and wearing a supportive neck garment. Sutures are removed in a week and healing is pretty rapid.
Result
The patient was very pleased with the improvements made. He recovered rapidly and the scar faded with time with the use of scar creams. Scars that are a bit more noticeable can be treated with a laser at that reduces the redness. This procedure is generally preferred for men who are not willing to undergo full facelift. The minimally noticeable scar is preferred over the excess loose skin.
