Description
Breast Reduction or Breast Lift-It’s Both!
Considerations for Selecting Breast Reduction or Lift
Many women come in wishing to have breast reduction, desiring a smaller, lifted appearance of the breasts. In addition, documentation of efforts to treat the neck and back pain with anti-inflammatories, support bras, and physical therapy or chiropractic manipulation has to be demonstrated. Once these conditions are met, patients are required to qualify based on measurements, such as sternal notch to nipple distance, which represents the degree of breast drooping or ptosis, and the estimated weight of breast resection must equal a standard amount dictated by the Schnurr criteria. In some cases, patients would not qualify based on a smaller amount of tissue being resected.
Concern
This 22-year-old patient seemed to qualify for breast reduction; however, the amount of tissue required to be removed would be prohibitive for her desired size. She was hopeful to go from a 36DDD to a D, but the amount required would leave her smaller than that.
Surgery
In this instance, Dr. Lyle performed a small reduction, essentially a breast lift. In some cases, he charges less -the cost of a mastopexy-although a reduction is still achieved, and a breast lift is the result.
Result
The patient was very happy with her smaller lifted breasts and still had relief from her neck and back pain.
