An Interview With Dr. Glenn Lyle

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in a small town called Radburn, New Jersey.  Just 14 miles outside of New York City.

Although I have had training and experience in all areas of plastic surgery, I specialize in cosmetic plastic surgery of the breast and body.

My initial interest was in Burns and burn reconstruction, as my Mentor was a world expert in this field.  While a lot of my plastic surgery training involved burns, I realized there was so much more within the field, so I pursued a career in more extensive general plastic surgery.

I like to golf, travel, and enjoy leisure time at the beach.  My interest in marine biology persists, and when I go on vacation, I still like to scuba dive.  I also enjoy hanging out with my family. I am a big sports fan, particularly football, so I follow NC State football and the Cleveland Browns in the NFL.

I think the public does not understand just how much training and hard work it takes to become a plastic surgeon.  Most people think we do facelifts or breast augmentations.  But my experience in 30 years of being a plastic surgeon entails helping people overcome the devastation of trauma, cancer, and deformity.  I have done things like put fingers and hands back on after detachment and re-creating new breasts for women who have lost them due to cancer.  Saving people’s limbs after car accidents and restoring their face after skin cancers.  My career has changed me because I empathize with people suffering from physical deformities.

My first passion was marine biology, so I attended the University of Massachusetts, got a degree in zoology, and then went to the University of Hawaii to pursue my dream of studying sharks.  Although this was very exciting, I felt the need to put my interest in science to better use in helping my fellow human beings.  So, I pursued a medical degree after obtaining a master’s in marine biology. During medical school, I immediately knew that surgery was what I was most and then ultimately pursued plastic surgery after doing 5 years of general surgery trauma. I then moved on to the University of Texas medical branch to do an additional 3-year residency in plastic surgery.  8 years of training prepared me well for my first job in plastic surgery.

Treat my patients as I would like to be treated.

Being able to allow patients to feel better about themselves.  It is not about vanity; it is about feeling more confident.

Kind, honest, and caring.

Patients pick me because I am trustworthy.  I am humble and try to get to know my patients, understand their goals, and lay out a realistic plan.  I am not sure if it is so unique to make someone feel comfortable, but I certainly hope to achieve that.
