There has a been a “buzz” recently about a new breast implant now fully approved in the United States. Motiva SmoothSilk® silicone breast implants had been available in other parts of the world such as Australia, Asia , Europe and South America. The FDA recently approved them for use in the United States and they are becoming more and more popular with plastic surgeons. Why is this? It has to do with technology. They have a silky-like surface which has proven to reduce inflammation after insertion and has the lowest reported rate of capsular contracture. It also has what is called TrueMonobloc®-a technology where the implant shell and the gel are chemically bonded to have a more uniform structure which increases their elasticity and durability. They have other safety features that are touted to make these breast implants very safe and reliable. There are 2 types of Motiva implants- Round and Ergonomix®. The choice of which implant is determined by patient’s breast characteristics and cosmetic goals.
This 33-year-old woman wished to go from an A cup to a C cup and wanted to look natural. After a thorough consultation, she chose submuscular Motiva implants using the Ergonomix® implant with a 340 cc device on the right side and the 360 cc device on the left because of some asymmetry. She was very pleased with her naturally appearing C cup breasts.
Are Motiva implants the best? That is hard to say just as there is no such thing as the “best plastic surgeon”.
