About Eyelid Surgery

The eyes are an attractive feature of the face that deserve to be visible; however, an abundance of skin around the eyes can produce a tired and unflattering look. Raleigh, NC plastic surgeon Dr. Glenn Lyle uses blepharoplasty (also known as eyelid surgery) to reduce excess skin and rejuvenate the upper or lower eyelid, creating a more "alert" look. Countless men and women receive eyelid surgery at Lyle Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Center to eliminate saggy eyelids, which helps with both look and function. Blepharoplasty, whether lower or upper, creates a more awakened but softer appearance and can produce striking improvements.

Ideal Candidates

Upper or lower blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgery that is performed on both men and women. At your first visit, treatment alternatives will be explained based on your areas of concern that need to be addressed. Generally, ideal candidates have excess, drooping skin and folds that exist on the top eyelid or bloated skin below the bottom eyelid. These conditions can cause functional and vision difficulty that can hinder normal, everyday life. For a rejuvenated look, eyelid surgery may be the right surgery for you. If you have hanging skin that folds over on the upper eyelid or bulging bags under the eyes, blepharoplasty can treat this to give you a more youthful appearance.

Surgical Technique

During blepharoplasty, depending on the type and complex nature of the surgery, general anesthesia or IV sedation will be provided. This treatment may be done on the upper eyelid alone, under or on the bottom eyelid, or a combination of both eyelids during a single surgical session.

  • Upper
Upper blepharoplasty assists in decreasing the folds of skin that droop over the eye and produces a more awakened and appealing look. An incision is usually made along the lid crease to excise loose skin and fatty tissue.
  • Lower
Correction on the lower lid is performed to reduce puffy and bulging skin beneath the lower eyelid. The incision is carefully made along the lash line to allow access to remove tissue and fat, and the skin is subtly lifted to allow for a softer, flatter look. In some cases, a nonsurgical laser treatment can be incorporated to assist with discoloration, while fillers can be used for more smoothness and softening if desired.

What to Expect

Bleph of the upper or lower eyelid can last up to two hours depending on whether one or both eyes are treated. After this outpatient surgery, you should plan about a week to recover and rest at home. A cold compress can help reduce discomfort, swelling, and bruising. The results from bleph surgery can last years, but while they are lasting, the aging process does not stop. To maintain the surgical outcomes, other nonsurgical cosmetic treatments at Lyle Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Center such as fillers, peels, and lasers can be paired to create a youthful-looking appearance.

A+ Blepharoplasty with Dr. Glenn Lyle of RPSC! - Finally, my visual field has been restored after constantly struggling with sagging- hooded eyelids that were impacting my daily life such as: working on the computer with my head tilted backwards to see the screen, forehead fatigue causing aching, my eyelashes pushing down and finally the feeling that I had a "frame of dimness" is completely gone! I can see clearly now and the world is a much...

My husband and I went for Botox on our foreheads and eyes. What a difference. Pain free and not invasive. So far I’m hooked!

NeoGen fan - my skin definitely feels firmer and tighter - I had my NeoGen Plasma treatment a couple months ago at Lyle Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics Center. Background, I am 52 and fair with lots of past sun damage which has caused aging. I have had other laser treatments throughout the years. NeoGen caught my eye as there is a short amount of downtime and seemly easy procedure to get through. I did A LOT of research. Also like that it has dermatological indications, ie. treating actinic keratosis. It helps rebuild skin thickness and volume. Seems to go much deeper than other lasers out there. Giving you lifting and tightening. My main concern area was around my eyes and jowls. I met with Haley, Dr. Lyle’s PA for my consult and she was the one who ended up doing my treatment. She was amazing!! She did a BBL on me just prior to the treatment then numbed my face then did the NeoGen treatment. It was comfortable, not nearly as painful as some other laser devices out there! She gave great post instructions and products to apply (Oh there are pre instructions as well, basically hydrate really well several days prior) She called me the next day to check on me and the following week to see how I was doing. I’ve waited to write this because NeoGen does not show results right away. It’s a building effect. At 2 months I can see my upper eye lids have lifted and my skin definitely feels firmer and tighter. It’s wild. They want me to come in at my 3 months for after photos and then again at 6 months. I can’t wait to see the comparison. The staff and practice in and of itself were wonderful. Feels very welcoming and everyone was so nice! Great find and will go there again for other services.

I had the such a fantastic BBL broad band laser, treatment with Mary Laura. Years of fun in the sun left me with memories…and brown spots, lots of them. My skin feels so soft, bright and my eyes feel open again, no one’s asking me “did you get enough sleep?” It’s incredible. I’ll be back, and I’m sending my friends!
