Tissue Expander based Breast Reconstruction - Skin Reduction Pattern, NC

Procedure Details

This 51 year old woman had a diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ in her right breast. She had multiple prior suspicious biopsies and had a family history of breast cancer so she elected bilateral mastectomies. She always wanted smaller breasts. Dr. Lyle performed immediate reconstruction in conjunction with a breast surgeon. The mastectomy flaps were tailored as a reduction pattern and tissue expanders and allograft were used. Post op expansions took 4 weekly visits and 4 months later she had her second surgery . This involved removal of the expanders and placement with 685 cc silicone gel implants. Simultaneous nipple reconstruction with skin grafts ( "skate flaps") using excess skin from her lateral breast area were performed . Tissue expander based reconstruction allows for very accurate shaping of the new breast- especially when the patient wants a reduction.
